Summary
There have been a number of studies on the roles of both project managers and product champions in new product development. However, few, if any, studies have examined the relationship between the two roles. This study therefore aimed to fill that gap, and set out a future research agenda in this field. This study reviewed articles discussing new product development, to see whether the roles of project manager and product champion could be distinguished based on organizational type or product characteristics. Other articles were then used as a secondary data source to identify projects involving one or both roles. The initial review found that project managers and product champions could be distinguished in several ways, including mode of appointment, with project managers appointed formally, and product champions emerging. Product champions could also be identified using a set of activities from the literature. The second review identified 75 new product development projects, of which 35 had a project manager, 23 a product champion, and ten both. Six propositions were identified to guide future empirical research on the interactions and relationships between project managers and product champions. Few, if any, studies, and none in Japan, have examined interactions between project managers and product champions. By making an initial attempt to do so, this study has been able to set out a future research agenda in this field.

And the introduction of American management system by Japanese firms likely is very dangerous for them. Summary
Background: Product champion (hereinafter abbreviated as PC) who are indispensable for the implementation of innovation have been discussed by many researchers. However, studies about PC have not yet reached the discussions on how to train or utilize product champions or actively manage championing. Moreover, such studies are vital in some western countries but research in collectivism culture like Japan is not enough. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. Both are based on our original standpoint. First one is to clarify the issues in previous study and suggest the direction of problem solving. Another one is to make propositions for survey in Japan.
Methods and Findings: In order to introduce new points of view on the analysis of existing PC studies, in this paper we organize previous studies, identify the issues, and propose the directions that PC studies should aim for. As a result that previous articles were reviewed by identified issues, the historical flow of PC studies were clarified. Additionally, four issues come to light. In order to solve that problem, perspective of PC study was suggested and three directions were indicated. Finally, seven propositions were suggested for survey in collectivism culture like Japan.
Conclusions: Although the results from many researchers have been accumulated afterwards in PC study, the analysis targets have not been unified, and various analysis results tend to be handled randomly. So, this paper suggested the perspective of PC issues and indicated the direction of future study. This research was able to find a breakthrough to advance PC research which has been somewhat stagnant. This appearance diagram presents the foundation on which common words and concepts used by individual researchers can be unified, to help overcome many research problems, which can be expected to lead to a new framework.
