To realize “low-carbon society”, one of the most promising energy sources is solar cell. Therefore, Asia Pacific solar cell industries are analyzed. Japan reduced the production share from 50% of 2004 to 17% of 2008. However, it is expected new government policies will promote the domestic market. USA increased the production share from 7% of 2007 to 14% of 2008 by the “Green New Deal”. China rapidly increased the production share to 33% of 2008, which is first ranking. I found solar cell business adapt the diverged technologies on the S-curve at the same period compared with the other technologies. I researched the reason of the adaptation of the diverged technologies. As the result, first requirement is short process day. In other word, simple process is required. Second is high motivation to enter the industry. In conclusion, Asia Pacific has the diverged technologies on the S-curve, but the solar cells businesses adapt the diverged technologies at the same period. In other word, Asia Pacific can fortunately contribute to “low-carbon society” despite of the technology progress level. |

Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and semiconductor devices, such as large scale integrated (LSI) circuits, are key devices supporting the information society and are becoming more complex. Baldwin et al. emphasized the power of modularity using the design structure matrix (DSM) with regards to complexity. There is no research on interdependences among companies by using the DSM; therefore, I conducted such research. Companies in the LCD industry want to produce larger LCD panels than each other by using customized equipments. According to the analysis by the DSM, the higher the interdependences among the companies, the higher the degree of integral business architecture of the industry. In contrast, the LSI industry uses a standard silicon wafer size as a “design rule”, which reduces the interdependences as shown by the DSM analysis results. Therefore, the lower the interdependences among the companies, the higher the degree of modular business architecture of the industry. In addition, the dynamics of the interdependences was analyzed. The results showed that by following a process from planning to operation, the interdependences in an industry with integral business architecture are reduced. By DSM analysis, I found the business architecture and dynamics of interdependences in the LCD and LSI industries. |

Carliss Y. Baldwin and Kim B. Clark emphasized the power of modularity using the design structure matrix (DSM), which was invented by Donald Steward and refined by Steven Eppinger. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and semiconductor device, such as Large Scale Integrated Circuit (LSI) are key devices supporting the information society. There are many similarities between them, such as formation process, design process etc. However, the LCD substrate size is 75 times of it of LSI and the LCD device size is about 21000 times of LSI size. However, the product design of LCD and LSI was not researched by using the DSM. Therefore, I researched them. The LSIs are produced by the standard size silicon wafer as the “design rules”, which is reducing the interdependencies among the tasks as the results analyzed by the DSM. Therefore, they can be made by the standard equipments, and can enjoy the division of labor. The product design of LSI is reducing the interdependencies and it is “modular” type. In the contrary, the LCDs are produced to obtain the larger LCD panels than those of other companies with the customized equipments. There is no standard size glass and the standard equipments. The product design of LCD is keeping the interdependencies among the tasks and it is "integral” type as the results analyzed by the DSM. The product design of Liquid Crystal Display and semiconductor device are researched by using the design structure matrix and categorized to “modular” and “integral” type respectively. |
