概要 This case examines the transformation of Thailand’s domesticated elephant industry following the 1989 logging ban, which left many elephants and their mahouts without work. Tourism emerged as an alternative, leading to the growth of elephant camps, particularly in Surin and Chiang Mai, creating employment and economic opportunities. However, increasing tourism demand has raised concerns about elephant welfare, as some animals are required to work long hours or perform for entertainment. While tourism can provide resources for elephant care and support mahouts’ livelihoods, the study emphasizes the need for sustainable ecotourism and effective conservation strategies. Well-managed sanctuaries and protected areas are essential for long-term elephant welfare and preservation.
