Details | This paper compares Japan and Korea in terms of their growing number of foreign residents, multicultural policies, and perceptions of foreigners including foreign workers and refugees. Despite the difficulty of generalizing different types of research results, it is commonly seen that perceptions of foreigners are positive with respect to labor force and diversity, and those of refugees are negative with respect to financial strain. Also, foreigners and refugees are likely to be associated with a higher crime rate. This article further discusses a Japanese style of multiculturalism that hinders historical issues and social inequality. |
