Details In recent years, the Chinese government has been taking steps to internationalise its currency, the renminbi. In order to do this it is having to undertake a wide range of difficult economic and financial reforms related to its domestic economy and international economic relations. This chapter, using theory based on the ideas of international identity, soft power as well as political economy, asks why China is pushing for an international renminbi, despite the considerable costs and risks of doing so.
