概要	In recent years there have been some concrete steps towards regionalism in the Northeast Asia region. However, a deep historical legacy of enmity between neighbouring countries in the region, in particular Japan, China and Korea, provides a constant irritant to the process of creating and embedding regional institutions and other longer-term cooperative initiatives which may promote reconciliation. This chapter argues that the reason for the slow development of regionalism in NEA is due to the continuing priority placed on the development of national identity in countries in NEA, to the detriment of progress on regional identity formation and reconciliation.
