Details In this paper, we report what international students were able to learn through a short-term intensive Japanese language program aimed at collaborating with the local community. Looking back on the program that was implemented three times from 2017 to 2019, focusing on the content of the third implementation revision based upon reflections from the prior two programs, we considered whether the four set goals were achieved: (1) improving Japanese ability, (2) deepening understanding of the region, (3) having a role as a member of the community, and (4) being able to collaborate with people from different cultural backgrounds. We analyzed the degree of achievement of these goals from questionnaires, logs, essay descriptions written by participating students, one-on-one interviews for checking speaking level, and proposals made by students to the community. Finally, we consider future possibilities for implementing Japanese language programs in collaboration with local communities.
