"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails." Mark Twain

During your time as a university (or graduate school) student, challenge yourself in many different ways! I myself am a person who is a conglomerate of diverse fields, but all of my experiences have been helping me greatly today. Before I went on to graduate school in Japan, I was (and still am) running an IT consulting company after returning to Japan through start-up activities that I started when I was a university student in the U.S. During my PhD, I was trained as a cognitive psychologist with an emphasis on decision science, but somehow I kept getting hired by medical schools at three different universities in Japan and abroad, working as a data scientist and innovation manager. And now I am fortunate enough to be in a business school, teaching and researching in the domain of “Business Administration x Psychology”.

Diverse backgrounds can be overwhelmingly powerful when glued with a robust system. One of those useful glues is an objective scientific or academic perspective, and one of the best ways to develop it is to write a research paper following rigorous academic methods. I urge you to join an undergraduate seminar and possibly look at the option of going on to graduate school. The real skills you acquire there can be put to good use in the real world of business right away.
■ Current research
As business landscape and social needs become increasingly complex, organizations such as companies, universities, and municipalities must continue to innovate in order to survive. What is crucial for this is "organizational development" that includes global human resource development. Let us explore balancing innovative organizations and individual well-being using the recent trend of positive psychology application such as psychological safety and compassionate leadership.
